Ingredients

  • 9 medium Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and cut into large chunks
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup water

Method

  1. Peel, core and chunk the apples, leaving the pieces large since they cook down. Mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves in a small bowl.
  2. Pour the spice mixture over the apples and toss gently until every piece is coated.
  3. Spread the apples in the crockpot and add the water so they do not stick as they soften.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for about 6 hours. No stirring needed.
  5. Mash the apples right in the crockpot with a potato masher, lightly for chunky or more for smooth.

Notes

Serve warm as a snack, over vanilla ice cream or pancakes, or use in place of oil in muffins. To can: fill pint jars with 1/2 inch headspace and process in a boiling water bath 20 minutes (adjust for altitude).
