Red, White & Blue Swirl 4th of July Cupcakes

Turn any cupcakes into patriotic showstoppers with a three-color buttercream rosette swirl using the Wilton Color Swirl coupler. Easy, mess-free and consistent across the whole batch.

Servings: 24 cupcakes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 24 baked and cooled cupcakes any flavor
  • 1 batch buttercream frosting about 4-5 cups, divided in three
  • red and blue gel food coloring
  • 1 Wilton Color Swirl three-color coupler set with large piping bags and a star tip

Method

  1. Divide the buttercream into three bowls. Tint one red and one blue with gel coloring; leave the third white.
  2. Separate the three parts of the Color Swirl coupler and drop one into each piping bag. Snip the bag tips so the coupler threads sit outside the bag.
  3. Clip the three bags together with the coupler ring and attach the decorating tip BEFORE filling; it is far less messy.
  4. Fill each bag with a color, twist the tops shut and squeeze until all three colors show at the tip. Do a test swirl on wax paper to even out the pressure.
  5. Line up the cupcakes. On each, pipe a lowercase "e": a short strip across the middle, then swirl up and around, finishing where you started.

Notes

The coupler works with any colors and any tip you have on hand, so reuse it for every holiday. Refill the bags to keep the colors consistent across the batch.
