Ingredients

  • 5 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk whole milk or half and half is best
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 8-10 slices sandwich bread wheat, white, or cinnamon bread
  • butter, maple syrup, and powdered sugar for serving

Equipment

  • Shallow pie plate
  • Whisk
  • Griddle or skillet

Method

  1. In a shallow pie plate, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
  2. Dip each slice of bread in the egg mixture on both sides, just long enough to cover the dry spots. Do not let it soak too long.
  3. Place the bread on a warmed griddle over medium to medium-low heat so it does not burn too quickly.
  4. When nicely browned, flip and cook the other side. Each side only needs a minute or two.
  5. Serve right away with a smear of butter between the slices, maple syrup on top, and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Makes 8-10 slices; double the recipe for a bigger crowd.
  • For a group, keep cooked French toast in a covered foil tin in a 170°F oven until ready to serve.
  • Fun toppings: fruit, chocolate chips, whipped cream.
