If you’ve been searching for a flavorful Dungeness crab bisque recipe, you’re in for a treat. My brother-in-law, a fisherman off the coast of Northern California, always seems to have a great catch to share. On our last visit, he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: all the Dungeness Crab I could peel and carry home. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to stock my freezer with this West Coast delicacy.
Peeling that much crab is no small task! It’s salty, messy, and leaves your fingers completely numb. But it was worth every bit of effort for the thrill of knowing I’d have fresh crab waiting for me back in Tennessee. Of course, I couldn’t resist indulging in more than my fair share during the trip. By the time we left, my stomach was full, and I had about six pounds of crab packed to take home.
One of those precious pounds became the star of this velvety crab bisque. It’s light yet satisfying… just the thing to warm you up on a chilly evening. The recipe is simple enough for any home cook to follow but delivers an impressive depth of flavor.
Preparing the Ingredients for Your 30-Minute Dungeness Crab Bisque Recipe
Making a flavorful Dungeness crab bisque recipe is easier than you might think. With just a handful of fresh ingredients and a little preparation, you’ll have the perfect base. The real magic starts with sautéing aromatics to build layers of taste. Let’s jump into this first step and create something truly comforting.
Step 1: Start by Sautéing Aromatics
To start, grab a large pot and melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Then add in 4 minced shallots and 2 teaspoons of minced garlic. Let these sauté for about 2 to 3 minutes until they are translucent. Stir in a tablespoon of tomato paste and let it cook for 30 seconds more. Pour in 1/4 cup of whiskey (bourbon also works) and use a wooden spoon to scrap all those yummy bits off the sides of the pot.
Let the mixture for this Dungeness crab bisque recipe cook down for about a minute, and then add in 2 cups of coconut milk and 4 cups of chicken broth. Mix it slowly until it comes to a boil.

Step 2: Blend the Dungeness Crab Bisque for Smoothness
Once the Dungeness crab bisque has boiled, turn off the heat and add half of the crab. Transfer the soup to a blender or use an immersion blender to puree the chunks of crab. The mixture should be smooth and a deep orange color. If using a blender, return the crab bisque to the pot and add in the remaining crab. Pour in a tablespoon of lemon juice and stir everything together.

Step 3: Serve and Garnish Beautifully
These are the bowls of Dungeness crab bisque I served my husband and I. I always make my kids try everything at least once, but I had a feeling they wouldn’t care for the sophisticated taste. It turned out that my daughter loved the crab bisque and ate an entire bowl, but for my boys, I made something easy and delicious like my 3-cheese baked macaroni and cheese. They never turn down gooey noodles covered in cheese!

Tips for Serving Crab Bisque Like a Pro
I scooped up the velvety Dungeness crab bisque into personal-sized soup bowls and garnished them with chives or green onions. I used these cute little soup bowls that aren’t overly big. They help this foodie with portion control!
