Cheese Melted onto French Onion Roast Beef Sandwich

French onion roast beef sandwiches bring together the best of two delicious worlds. Do you like roast beef dips? How about Philly cheesesteaks? Caramelized onions? Can you imagine the happy dance your taste buds will do when these two great sandwiches marry in your mouth? It truly is the birth of something monumental.

I have had a true Philly cheesesteak at Geno’s in the heart of Philadelphia. I have also had the signature French dip at Phillipe’s in downtown Los Angeles. These are in no way comparable to each other, and they stand alone in delectability.

But if, just if, they had a child in your kitchen, these 10-minute French onion roast beef sandwiches would taste pretty darn close. It’s the closest, quickest, and most delicious version you can make in your own home without grilling your own steak, making your own cheese sauce, or baking your own bread.

Preparing Perfect French Onion Roast Beef Sandwiches

Ready to create French onion roast beef sandwiches that will make your taste buds celebrate? With just a few simple steps, you’ll have a satisfying and flavorful meal that’s perfect for any occasion. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Sauté the Vegetables

Start by slicing one green bell pepper and one medium-sized onion into thin, even strips for that perfect bite. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, then toss in your veggies. Sauté until they’re soft and have beautifully browned char marks that add flavor and texture.

Step 2: Heat the French Onion Soup

While the veggies are cooking, grab a regular-sized can of French onion soup and stir in 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce for a savory boost. Pour the mixture into a small saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it’s steaming and just about to boil.

Step 3: Marinate the Roast Beef

Once the soup reaches a light boil, turn off the heat and carefully place your roast beef slices into the warm broth. This step allows the beef to soak up all those rich, oniony flavors. Let them marinate for a few minutes while you prep your rolls.

Step 4: Prep Your French Rolls

Line a cookie sheet with foil to make cleanup easier, and slice open your French rolls lengthwise. Be mindful to leave the bottoms intact so your sandwich fillings stay in place when it’s time to dig in.

Step 5: Assemble the Sandwiches

Using tongs, pull out the marinated roast beef slices from the soup and layer them generously inside each hoagie roll. If you love that caramelized onion flavor, drizzle a little extra French onion soup over the top for added richness.

Step 6: Add the Veggie Mixture

Spoon the sautéed bell pepper and onion mixture evenly onto each sandwich. The veggies add a pop of color and extra flavor that complements the savory beef perfectly.

Step 7: Top with Provolone Cheese

Take one slice of provolone cheese per sandwich and cut it in half to fit evenly over the top. Place your sandwiches on the prepared cookie sheet and pop them into a preheated 400-degree oven. Bake for about 3-5 minutes, just until the cheese is beautifully melted and gooey.

Serving Suggestions for Any Occasion

Ooooooo La La! Don’t those French onion roast beef sandwiches look incredible? My husband loves to use the extra French onion soup for dipping his sandwich. He also likes to top his sandwich with banana peppers and eat it alongside kettle or BBQ chips.

I think these would be great to serve on a family game night when having a casual backyard dinner with friends or when your teenagers invite all their friends over. When I want a more substantial meal, I’ll add my apple, broccoli, and horseradish slaw as a side dish. I’m sure you can find a use for these, right?
