How to Make Italian Sausage Hoagie Sandwiches

Making Italian sausage hoagie sandwiches is a breeze when you follow these simple steps. From prepping the baking sheet to assembling the sandwiches, this recipe is designed to save you time without sacrificing flavor.

Step 1: Prep the Baking Sheet

First, line a cookie sheet with foil and drizzle it with olive oil or spray it with non-stick baking spray.

Step 2: Chop the Vegetables

Second, chop up 2 bell peppers and 1 red onion into large chunks. I like to use two different colored bell peppers, so the Italian sausage sandwiches look pretty.

Throw these vegetables into a bowl and drizzle about 1/4 cup of olive oil on top. Sprinkle in some Kosher salt and black pepper (about a teaspoon each), and then give everything a gentle toss.

Step 3: Arrange and Bake

Lastly, spread the peppers onto the cookie sheet and then nestle your Italian sausages in between.

Bake these at 425 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Step 4: Mix the Spread

While the Italian sausage sandwiches are cooking, mix together the super easy spread for the hoagie rolls. All you need is:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard

This spread tastes a lot like Thousand Island dressing if you are familiar with that!

Step 5: Prepare the Bread

Then cut your hoagie rolls (or whatever bread you like!) in half and layer on the spread liberally.

Step 6: Combine Ingredients

Now that the sausages are done cooking, they should be nice and plump! The peppers and onions should have nice grill marks. Those give the sandwiches even MORE flavor!

Step 7: Final Assembly

Now, simply put a sausage inside each roll and cover it with a spoonful or two of peppers and onions. And the best part? Roll that foil up, throw it away, and the dishes are done!

Why These Italian Sausage Hoagie Sandwiches Are Versatile

These are best served hot, but they do make great leftovers! Italian sausage hoagie sandwiches are a great option for hungry teenagers, an easy weeknight meal, or even dinner or lunch on game day. I also find them to be useful in meal prep. Without the roll, they are a protein-packed, keto-friendly lunch.

If you’re looking for other easy dinner ideas that use similar ingredients and techniques, I have a few favorites to recommend. My Italian sausage and lentil soup is a hearty, comforting meal that’s perfect for cooler days. For a quick and satisfying option, try my 30-minute chicken parmesan, which comes together easily in one pan. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet and savory, the sheet pan apricot chicken is always a crowd-pleaser.
